Freedom fighters in Kashmir had called for a boycott of the by-polls in Srinagar, which they believed to rigged by the Indian government.
In the protests that followed, three people were killed and dozens injured as Indian police violently handled those participating.
Indian police used tear gas to counter the protesters chanting anti-Indian slogans at first but then opened fire, killing three people. A dozen more were severely injured as the after reports said. The incident took place in Budgam district on Sunday.
The by-election in Srinagar is being held to fill a vacant seat in the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of Parliament. A second by-poll in the state for a separate Lok Sabha seat is set to take place on April 12 in Anantnag. The results of both polls are set to be announced on April 15.
